Tessellations

In maths we are learning about shape rotation, reflection, enlargement and translation.  Today we began making our own tessellations.

Rotation - when a shape has turned - clockwise or anticlockwise
Reflection  - when a shape can be folded onto itself perfectly or has the 'mirror' effect
Translation - when a shape is moved from one place to another
Enlargement - when a shape is made bigger by a scale

An artist called M.C. Escher uses reflection and symmetry in his artwork.  Here are some of his work.
What patterns and shapes can you see?

Art Gallery lessons

On Wednesday morning we were lucky to have Susie from the Christchurch Art Gallery visiting.  She showed us some different pieces of art - one a metal etching of Lyttleton when it was first being settled and another which was completely different - an abstract piece.

Here are some photos of us screening printing in the style of the abstract artist we looked at.

What makes a good speech?

Check out this video another teacher made for her class to show what a good speech looks like and what a not so good speech looks like.  Can you see the differences?

Try videoing your speech and see what you look like. Or practice in the mirror.

Basketball A team the Oaks

On Thursday the 1st of September the basketball A team Oaks played the YMCA team,
and we lost 16-14.  I thought that Jaia got player of the day because he kept creating space for us
to pass to him.
