2012 Room 23 movie

Each year, I make up a movie of our year together. While making this year's one I realised we do a lot of fantastic things. We have had "SUCH FUN" together.

End of year awards

This afternoon in the sweltering heat we had our final end of year assembly to celebrate our successes and to see off the year 6 children leaving St Albans. Here are the awards for our class.

Congratulations to:

Heathcliff for receiving Room 23's academic excellence award

Gracie for receiving Room 23's values award, school council certificate and Hockey player of the year

Flynn for receiving the Year 5 Community Cup for service to the school, overall boys Swimming cup and school council certificate

Thanks to all the parents for coming along and supporting your children, not just today but throughout the whole year. We are so lucky to have such wonderful children and community spirit.

Percy Jackson

We are reading the first Percy Jackson book - "Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief."

It is about a boy who finds out he is a little different from others and he has a very important quest to complete. There are lots about ancient Greece and the Greek gods and goddesses.

Here is a link if you want to find out more about the myths, gods and goddesses.

Tennis

Last week we had 2 sessions of tennis. We were taught how to hit the ball correctly on our forehand and backhand. We learnt that you have to hit the ball backhand with 2 hands not 1 unless you can do 20 one handed push ups!

Here are some pictures:

Gracie got the record for most hits in a row on the edge of the racquet

Solar Eclipse

Today we almost saw the solar eclipse. The light outside went a funny yellow, but we didn't get to see the eclipse because Mrs Ford made us work and she said it might happen at lunch time. By lunch time though everything was back to normal! We had missed it!

We were talking about eclipses and space and Connor showed us a clip his Dad had shown him.  Check it out! It really makes you think about how small we really are.

Jaeda's new sister

This is my baby sister Kiloa Vili. When she was born she weighed 8.5 pounds.
She was born on November 7 2012.  She has lots of hair and she is very healthy.
She came out 3 weeks early, if she stayed in my mum's stomach for too long she would have came out weighing about 9.5 pounds.

The time she was born at was 10:17am.

Our own AVAILLL movies

Last term, after completing the AVAILLL reading programme (watching DVD's with subtitles), the children were put into groups to create an AVAILLL movie of their own.  The idea behind it was to enable children with reading difficulties or younger children to participate more fully in the programme.  They had to storyboard their production, create any props or backdrops and then act out and film the scenes.

Here is the "KNOCK OUT!" groups effort.

STA GAMES

At the end of last term, to celebrate our term of 'Culture', we had our own STA Games! We began the day with an opening ceremony where the "King" and "Queen" came to visit.  Followed by a welcome by the TTRR classes and some other different cultural performances.

Then the games began! We competed in our house colours in all sorts of weird and wacky events that the teachers came up with from water balloon throwing to egg/potato spoon races to dress up races to relays.

We were even treated to a range of different cultural meals for lunch including: butter chicken, beef or chicken souvlaki and thai noodles. Yum!

Wow! We are so lucky to go to St Albans School.

BP Challenge Week 1

This term the children that don't go to choir are completing BP Challenges. These are technology and science challenges where they have to work together to solve problems.

This week's challenge was called The Long Lift.  The children had to design a mechanism that would lift a GPS device (bottle of water) from the concrete outside our class up to the balcony above. They were only given a roll of cellotape, 3 pages from a newspaper and a plastic bag.

Here are some photos and videos of the challenge.

The girls were very quick at coming up with their design and plan and they worked well together.

After a lot of arguing the boys managed to create a good design.

Runathon

On the last day of Term 3 the senior school held a Runathon. Each student raised money by finding people to sponsor them.  Family and friends could give a donation or sponsor per lap.

The money raised will help bring down the cost of camp this year.

So far Room 23 has raised and AMAZING $920!

Heart of Achievement Week 1 Term 4

Congratulations to Flynn and Jazmin for earning a Heart of Achievement this week.

Both of them have been working really hard at improving their reading, particularly their fluency and comprehension.  They have also been super stars in their maths groups during maths! They are both very knowledgeable at fractions.

Well done you two and keep up the great working attitudes!

Cultural performance

This term we have been celebrating all the different cultures and backgrounds we have in our class and at St Albans.

We chose to learn a dance to the music Jai Ho, an Indian/Bollywood dance.  We chose this because we have quite a few Indian families at school.

A BIG thank you to Vicki  (Flynn's mum) and Debbie (Vienna's mum) for helping create the amazing outfits! Mrs Ford would have gone mad if it was left to her to make them.

Room 23 in their wonderfully colourful outfits.

Here is a wee clip of our dance we did on the day. Enjoy!

Celebrate Term 3!

Wow what a busy term we have had!

We had a Yr 4-6 celebration assembly this morning and we have some very clever, committed and talented class mates in Room 23.

Well done Maneo and Ollie for gaining CREDIT for their UNSW tests - Maneo for writing and Ollie for spelling.  Great work boys and keep up the superb work!

Newspaper technology challenge

Last Friday a mix of room 24 and room 23 students who don't go to choir competed in a technology challenge. The challenge was to create a gladiator outfit out of newspaper. It had to include: a shield, sword, armour and shoes. There was also room for creativity. Here are some of their creations and models.

Flynn the crusader

This was the winning team voted by room 22. They liked the creativity and that their design was well planned.

There was a lot of great team work involved. Well done everyone. It looked like it was a lot of fun!

Shayan's reading

Here is Shayan reading his shared book. Mrs Ford got the giggles and it took at least 5 attempts from Shayan to get his book started. Shayan was great and wasn't put off by Mrs Ford's lack of self-management skills.

Polar bears and global warming

Today in reading we read about polar bears and how global warming is affecting their natural habitat.  We were very concerned and we talked about what we can do to help reduce, re-use and recycle.

Character descriptions

In writing, we are learning how to write about characters in stories.  Today we wrote a class description of a fictional teacher.  Here is what we wrote:

Our teacher is a very unusual wrinkly, old lady.  We get distracted easily by her grey, bushy monobrow and her long red hair that comes down to her tail bone.  She is very strict but always treats us the same.

Mrs Fink is unusual because she always dresses in black and red outfits like the Crusaders.  She wears over-sized red socks with black jandals all year round, even in winter!

When we are walking to school, Mrs Fink rides past us on her purple scooter.  Her black cat, Mr Tinkles, sits in a brown basket on the back of it.  He wears a harness to ensure he doesn't jump out!

In her spare time, Mrs Fink learns ballet.  We are always getting notices about being invited to watch her recitals.

Harewood Premier Women win!

My hockey team won our final on Saturday.  My team has not won the Rose Bowl trophy since 1976. So it was very exciting when we won! Thanks to Brigit for taking these photos and for Niamh, Mr McKenzie Brigit and Gracie for cheering me on! Hopefully one day you girls will be playing in this team when you're older!
