Science Friction

Yesterday Room 26 had their Science Alive session. We learnt all about forces.

Did you know that a scientist named Sir Isaac Newton came up with 3 laws for motion?

We learnt about these 3 laws:

1st law of motion is:  You need a force to move something - a push or a pull
2nd law of motion is: The bigger an object, the bigger the force needed to move it
3rd law of motion is: That there is an opposite and equal reaction for every motion - e.g. a balloon moves the opposite direction to the air that comes out of it.

We did a few experiments to learn about these laws.

Glorious Gobstoppers

THE EXPERIMENT

What you need:
m&ms, cup water, see through container

What to do:
Put 4 m&ms into the centre of the container but they can't touch each other.
Fill with water

Observations:
We saw that the m&ms colour sunk to the bottom of the container and that if you covered the m&ms fully with water the m's floated off!
We also saw that the colours didn't mix and stayed in sections in the container.

Questions from the investigation:
What would happen if the m&ms touched?
What would happen if you added more m&ms?
What would happen if you changed the temperature of the water?
Would the same thing happen with different types of lollies?
