Last Thursday Room 23 went to the Botanical Gardens to learn about biodiversity. Ben from the council taught us some scientific terms for how species are going - THRIVING - animals are doing well, THREATENED - if we don't look after them they could become extinct, EXTINCT - there are no more of them in the world. Terms for where species came from - INTRODUCED - brought in from another country like cats, dogs, rats, NATIVE - found in one or more countries like the pukeko/swamp hen, ENDEMIC - only found in one country like the kiwi.
We played some games where we pretended we were fantails and the fantails had to protect their land. This game showed us the importance of protecting trees or replanting ones that need to come down and how so many species depend on one another.
We also went on a plant scavenger hunt. We were split into small groups - a map reader, a sketcher and a recorder. We had to hunt for 3 numbers and draw and describe the plants we found, then by using the info gathered, find out the names of the plants and what they were used for when Maori and early European settlers came to NZ.
Later that day we had Skate Skool where we tried skate boarding and roller blading.
