Our City Uncovered Trip

In week 3 our class visited the Canterbury Provincial Buildings.  We had a look around the building and got to go into the room where the council used to sit and make decisions.

In small groups, we were given maps and a tape recorder and we had to find 6 different locations in the CBD.  Some of the things we looked at were:
 - Regent Street where the tram goes.  This area is still in its original condition with a Spanish theme.
- Victoria Square - we looked at the statues of Queen Victoria and Captain James Cook.  We also found a floral clock and the oldest bridge in Christchurch.
- Cathedral Square - we found Christchurch's coat of arms.
- Rhododendron Island - in the Avon River is a small island.  This is where the original 2 boys schools used to play at lunchtimes.  The boys used to play fight over who 'ruled' the island.

The second part of the trip, we had to plan a city for the future.  We learnt about designing a map using keys to create our new city.  We had to include 5 modes of transport, basic necessities such as power, water, shelter and food and some fun things for our citizens.

Here are some photos from the day.
